Peglin

1h 36m

A Podcast Review of Peglin: This week we add the 2022 Pachinko deckbuilder roguelite Peglin to the tier list. Danny played this one while waiting in the hospital for his daughter to be born (while everyone was sleeping, it's okay!) - will that influence the tier list placement?

On this episode we discuss our experience with Pachinko games and discuss the covid-fueled origins of Peglin, concieved in a 48-hour game jam where the event's theme was "fall". Peglin is one of the more well-known of the ever-growing Pachinko subgenre of roguelites, which we think traces back to 2020's Roundguard. Since this episode's recording we have Nubby's Number Factory, Peganomics, Pegfinity, Ballionaire, Pegfinity, the list goes on. What is it about Pachinko games that lends itself to roguelitification?

While we both enjoyed the casual nature of this game, there wasn't quite enough meat on the bone (read: run-to-run variance) to move this high up the tier list. It works well as a pretty casual pick up and play game but we both burned out on it pretty quick and weren't itching to keep going. David was supremely charmed by the "world building and immersion" (you can tell who's writing these show notes) but at the end of the day we just didn't feel motivated to keep at it.

Peglin is in C tier on our roguelite tier list.
